Bob Costas
Bob Costas, our guide for athletes and games of all kinds joins me for a conversation about sports and much more as sports has become an increasingly popular part of global entertainment and culture. Costas is a man with a knowledge and eloquence for describing men and women at the top of their games and for not avoiding the issues that confront sports. He spent his career primarily at NBC Sports where he has done it all: play-by-play, studio host, and interviewer as he described baseball, football, basketball, golf, tennis, horse racing, and car racing. Along the way, he was the host of 12 Olympics.
Bob Costas got his first job offer from KMOX in St Louis and dropped out of college at Syracuse University. He is still working in his seventies. (Syracuse lately gave him an honorary degree.). He has received 28 Emmys for excellence. Costas is known for his skill in finding the right word and the right story to define an event or a life.
He gave eulogies for two baseball immortals and friends, Mickey Mantle and Stan Musial.
He spoke eloquently after the death of Muhammed Ali.
In 2019, Costas left NBC in a disagreement over his expressed opinions on topics related to sports and society. NBC Sports invited him to the Olympics in Paris in 2024 and he will likely rejoin the Network Sports Department in a Senior Emeritus role as Tom Brokaw served at NBS News after stepping down as anchor.
